With the increased trend of registering animals as “Emotional Support Animals”, is it really hurting anyone? The answer is a resounding YES! More and more businesses are becoming suspicious of anyone who visits their establishment with a pet in tow. The internet in inundated with vest colors and registration papers so similar to those of true service animals, that it is hard to differentiate between a service animal and an emotional support animal. Often you can identify the difference depending on the human’s handicap! An example, a blind person with a seeing eye dog is obvious. But what if one of our brave service personnel suffers from PTSD and truly has need of an emotional support animal. Businesses may refuse to allow them access or cause the embarrassment by questioning the authenticity of their “Emotional Support Animal”. So yes, those individuals using this as a source to circumvent some rule or regulation can hurt those who truly need this service. If we are going to allow emotional support animals, one would think strict regulations would be put in place to identify and confirm the need for such animals and protocols for gaining and retaining registration!
