Turkey Talk

This blog was originally published in November of 2013. I felt it was worth sharing one more time. According to www.propertycasualty360.com, more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year”. Why you ask? Deep Fried Turkey!!!

There are an estimated 300 million, YES MILLION, turkeys eaten each year and 15-20% of those are consumed on Thanksgiving. That’s a whopping 51 million! Deep frying the delicious birds has increasingly become a Thanksgiving tradition. Many of the so called “Fry Chiefs” will suffer minor burns and small fire damage to their homes due to overflowing oils.

However, for some the experience will be devastation. According to Nationwide.com, of the top 10 states experiencing the largest number of incidents, Florida ranked #5 with 13 deaths in the past two years! According to Statefarm.com over $15 million dollars was paid out in related losses.  I’m sure you are wondering, what does this have to do with Condo blog? Well, there isn’t any readily available statistics on Condominium fires due to Turkey Frying. It is just a matter of time before it occurs.

So why not be proactive and bring the issue to the forefront of everyone’s attention. I’m not saying you shouldn’t fry a turkey if you live in a condo! That call is made by your master deed, your rules & regulations, fire code and your Board of Directors. But what I am saying is, USE EXTREME CAUTION. With so many people living in such close proximity within a condominium community, the potential for hazard could be catastrophic.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday!
