THE GOOD(?), THE BAD AND THE UGLY!

Last week, celebrating Labor Day, we praised the “good” board members, the ones who work hard to create a “peaceful” community and are willing to take the time to go to seminars and learn how things should be done “right!”

This week we are talking about the “bad” guys, the board members who are not serving the community, but are pursuing their own private agenda and make up their own “rules” as they go along without even bothering to get to know the governing documents and the Florida statutes that regulate their community.

And yes: There are still too many of these “folks” – despite the fact that free seminars to learn he “right way” are offered after CCFJ, Inc. helped passing the bills creating these seminar offering.

The old saying still works with many of these “self-serving” board members: “Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely!” It is just amazing how many owners are bitching about sitting board members, complaining about their actions and their unwillingness to share important information with the other owners. Then they recall the sitting board – or get voted on the board at the next election – only to become worse board members than the ones they complained about before.

For some of these folks it’s just a “power trip” – allowing them to tell their neighbors how to run their lives and enjoying some privileges – also called “kickbacks”. Their names may not be Adolph, Joseph or Fidel, but these folks can be dangerous dictators endangering our families’ welfare.

The reason why this can happen: The lack of willingness of our Florida legislators to finally create a government agency that actually ENFORCES all the laws they created over the years. We all know that the best law is useless without enforcement. And there is nothing in this world that shows that saying better than community associations.

As long as the Florida Legislature is unwilling to enact laws that will prevent these communities from being the breeding ground for dictatorships we will see dictatorial – and often totally incompetent – board members running the show!

We think that only owners can really represent owners, since all service providers surely have a different interest! We are trying to create owner-friendly laws, but the best laws are useless without enforcement. And enforcement is totally lacking in Florida !
