BOARD MEETINGS VIA VIDEO CONFERENCING?

For years my team and I have been trying to get our board members to start moving their meetings to some form of video conferencing.  We knew that it would come as the generational changes occurred; however, COVID-19 has now accelerated these changes to happen sooner than later.

The benefits of hosting Board meetings via video conferences are plentiful. It creates a more structured environment, with more transparency and visibility. The feedback we've received from several Boards we serve has been very positive.   Boards are very pleased with how easy it is to use and how easy it is to share all that this being discussed with the attendees. Financials, management reports, etc. can be shown to both the board and members on the video call. Questions that do arise can come in via a Q&A from the conferencing provider, and it helps reduce some of the outbursts that usually occur.

Our board members have enjoyed it so much that some have asked if these meetings could be held in this fashion moving forward.  Some have also suggested hosting these meetings during lunchtime to avoid having late evening meetings and posting the board meeting on the association website for all to see.

While some may believe that this form of communication will not create that sense of community they bought into, I believe the opposite to be true.  By allowing the associations business to be conducted in time effective and transparent manner, it allows for more time to be focused on creating events that will bring the community together rather than separate them.  Further, you may capture more volunteers if these kinds of options exist.

I'd love to get the opinion of our readers... have you had video conferencing board meetings?  What's been your experience and ease of use?  Would you consider hosting all your meetings in this fashion?
