PROS & CONS OF LIVING IN AN ASSOCIATION

While no two associations are alike, association living comes with many benefits. In most cases, owners will benefit from the following:

  1. Increased Community Engagement & Pride

  2. Access to Amenities you may not have had outside of an association.

  3. Increased property values

  4. Architectural Controls

  5. Rules & Regulations to deter Nuisance Activity

  6. Well-Maintained Common Area & Amenities

Some of the drawbacks of living in an association are:

  1. Assessments or Special Assessments - Having things maintained on your behalf comes at a cost.

  2. Violations / Deed Restrictions - While a benefit, it can also be a drawback. If you violate any of the restrictions, you should find yourself paying penalties.

  3. Mismanagement - Not having proper leadership from a Board or a management company can create havoc; however, this could quickly be remedied with a change of both or either.

The benefits of living in an association outweigh the drawbacks. If you feel this way in your community, make sure you applaud leadership (Board/Management) for their superb job. If you don't, it may be time to create change in your community. As JFK once said, "Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future."
