IS MORE OR LESS BETTER?

The appropriate number of board members seems to always be questionable. This is especially true when there is unrest within a community on how the board us handling various issues.

 

As Eric stated, “Arbitration cases have consistently held that when governing documents provide a range for the number of directors, such as “not less than X, but not more than Y”, the statute sets the number as five. From an operational and administrative standpoint, the number 5 seems to be spot on. Boards who have only 3 members often times are accused of shutting out the 3rd member and the 2 voting together are running a dictatorship. Boards who have 7, 9 or 11 members, seem to have more dissention amongst members and often appear to have faction against faction getting little accomplished.
