THE ASSOCIATION BEST KEPT SECRET

By Darlys Walker

Many of our readers may think that theft by a board member is the #1 best kept secret. At least until they are caught. But I would venture to guess that the installation of cameras may top that. This seems to be an ongoing project, and each time the board changes over, the demand for more cameras becomes an issue. As you would guess, I have an opinion on this.

As Eric stated, this is a material change, and in almost every scenario the board refuses to take a vote and move forward with the installation. Countless communities have installed cameras at their entrance/exit to catch those individuals damaging the gate or have installed cameras at the compactor to catch those individuals improperly disposing furniture and appliances. Or how about those cameras installed at mail kiosks to catch individuals breaking into mailboxes. It seems crazy to me that taking measures to minimize “vandalism” expenses for the association in the common areas should be allowed. I could agree with adding cameras in the elevators or residential hallways where it might infringe on a private moment, but what do you think? Should material change definitions be changed or clarified?

By the way, while we are on the subject of cameras, let me give you one more opinion. Being married to a retired police officer for 25+ years, anyone in law enforcement will tell you, “Cameras will NOT prevent a crime from occurring, it will simply record the incident”. This is just food for thought the next time you are thinking about adding cameras. How often do you see on the news, where a person enters a convenience store, pulls a gun, looks straight into the camera, usually smiling, and then shoots the cashier? Yes the camera helps identify the robber, but No, the victim was not saved!
