WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, RECALLING THE BOARD IS THE LAST OPTION

With most elections in Florida associations now over, the most common question asked is, “How do we recall the board”? Recalling a board is often a necessary action needed to allow the association to right itself and rid the board of unnecessary evil. But many times, if the board and homeowners would just communicate openly, honestly, and respectfully, I believe they would find they just might be wanting to accomplish the same things. The board and owners may not agree on the path necessary to reach their objectives. But if they carefully listen to each other’s point of view, leaving emotions out of the equation, they might just see eye to eye by compromising and working together. The most unproductive meetings are those where homeowners are screaming at the board and the board is screaming at the owners, as well as screaming at each other. No one should be subjected to this nonsense. Feelings get hurt, there is no harmony in the community and then the words, “Recall the board” permeate throughout, pitting neighbor against neighbor.

A good board will listen to its homeowners, taking into careful consideration, what actions the majority of the owners request before making the decision that it is best for the community as a whole. Sure there are board members that should be recalled, but for all others, remember, listening to each other and treating each other respectfully may save a number of issues. What do you think about recalling a board?
