SHOULD A BOARD SEE THE BIG PICTURE

Far too often we hear board members make statements like "I ran my own company for 25 years, I can run this building", or, "I can manage the budget and financials, I owned my own company". Unfortunately, we find this is not the case. It's true, possessing some fundamental knowledge of supervising personnel and overseeing the overall big picture can be a great asset and can be very beneficial to an association. But not without working knowledge of real estate management and the experience of having managed a non profit corporation, which happens to involve the daily life experiences of every owner and their families.

It's true that the association documents and the state statutes clearly define what authority board members must follow when making everyday decisions. My question is, are individuals who see the regulations and decision making as clear cut, by the book, and no room for compromise or consideration of the "human element" or is the better qualified candidate one who has the ability to think outside the box and make decisions which encompass the need and desires of the unit owners while ensuring compliance with mandated regulations. What are your thoughts?
