JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER

Judging a book by its cover is said to be unwise. But when choosing an attorney for your Association you absolutely should judge the attorney and firm by the company they keep. After 30 years in the Real Estate Management business I’ve learned that “Birds of a feather flock together”.

Here are a few instances. There is a law firm in Davenport, Florida who represents a Developer who has stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from an Association. While he has been found guilty, he has yet to do jail time or make restitution. All the while this Attorney represents and specializes in Association law. Would you want him representing your Association? Then of course, there are the major law firm, throughout Florida, connected to a major Management company, both of which have questionable practices and both fall short of quality customer service. Their most frequently used phrase to their clients is, “If you don’t like it, then sue us”, or “You can’t fire us, we’ll sue you”.

Of course there are attorneys who truly care about what they do, the people they serve and the positive impact they make. These attorneys fight for what is right, not necessarily what is right for their wallet. So when looking for legal representation, do your homework. Google is a great tool!
