Well it’s not often I disagree with Eric, but on the issue of holding a candidate debate for board elections, I say no way! Having had the hands on experience of assisting and facilitating two such events in years past, both had several things in common.

  • In both cases, law enforcement was present and total chaos occurred.

  • Not only did the candidates not agree on issues, but many of the owners disagreed with both candidates.

  • Most owners felt, the” free for all” atmosphere created by the loud minority, further divided the community.

    •

    However, maybe I only partially disagree with Eric. While a debate can be horrific, a “Meet the Candidate” if structured properly, can be informative and pleasant. Simply send out invitations to all owners to attend a “Meet the Candidate Wine and Cheese.” Provide a small amount of refreshments, name tags for the candidates and let everyone mingle! No arguments, only one on one interaction. Allow one hour for the event and tell the candidates they may hand out their bio’s etc. What do you think? Good idea or not?
