PERCEPTION IS REALITY

“Perception is reality”. I always hated when a former boss would use this saying. I wanted to respond, NO, reality is reality.” As I’ve grown older, I now understand just how true this statement is. The way one individual sees an issue, to them this is their reality.

CAM’s are charges with the responsibility of protecting property values. This often means determining when a situation presents itself as an emergency. And yes, sometimes mistakes are made in judgment, but for the most part when entering someone’s unit most professionals understand the importance of using good judgment and care.

In my early years of Association Management, we had a Homeowner with a sweet black cocker spaniel named Daisy. One day, as I was leaving the office, I found Daisy wondering the property, so I took her to the office and tried to call the Homeowner but was unable to reach her. After numerous attempts, I decided to use her key, which was kept secured and coded in the office, and put Daisy back in her condo.  On Monday morning, I was greeted at the office buy the Homeowner who was extremely upset. To my chagrin, she informed me that she had taken a boat trip over the weekend with her dog Daisy and had returned to find a strange in her unit and it had destroyed her sofa! I of course apologized and had the unit cleaned and replaced the sofa. In my mind it was an emergency to protect the Homeowners pet. Boy was MY perception completely wrong!
