I Pay Your Salary!

Volunteering to serve on an Association Board certainly qualifies as a good deed! With the privilege of representing all of the Homeowners or Condo Owners, Board Members are charged with the task of making all operational and financial decisions affecting the community. It is, without a doubt, a thankless job. Board Members often suffer relentless bickering from the Homeowners, tireless hours of property inspections, financial reviews, vendor supervision and so forth. But should they get paid for their time and effort?

Allowing for compensation could open the door to entice more individuals to run for the Board. In some cases, although I think very few, we might see more qualified candidates running. Many of the individuals who choose to run will simply see it as an income generating venture.

Can you imagine the level of complaining Board Members would receive if the Homeowners were paying them to serve? I venture to say the most common spoken phrase would be "I pay your salary". Homeowners would feel a deeper level of entitlement. I would further guess, Board meetings would be less productive and more volatile as Homeowners never like to be told "No", especially by an employee. After all, isn't that what a paid Board Member would essentially do? What do you think?
