CAN YOU PREVENT THE NEED FOR RECALLS?

Recalling a Board is seldom successful. Most Homeowners are apathetic to the chaos created by unscrupulous Board members and simply refuse to get involved. Those Homeowners who attempt to lead the recall are often met with ambivalence and become disheartened and fail to continue this uphill battle. The result is yet another failed attempted recall and adds to the frustration of Homeowners who feel they have no say in the operation of their Association. Hummm…...remind you of the way most Americans feel about our leadership?

We as Americans have become so complacent that the "tail wags the dog". Just as the Homeowner can’t truly direct their Board, Americans can’t direct their elected officials. Don't get me wrong, not all Boards are bad, just as all politicians are not bad. But we need a timelier, easy process of ridding ourselves of the undesirable. Changing policies and procedures is never a quick process, so lets examine actions we can take to decrease the needs for recalling Board Members.

First and foremost, participate in your community. Get involved, know your neighbors, attend Board Meetings and serve on committees. This will give every Homeowner valuable insight into the issues facing an Association and the personalities and traits of other Homeowners.  You can see what attributes they possess, determine are they a problem solver, a pot stirrer, are they an effective communicator or a gossip? Do they truly have the best interest of the entire community at heart or are they working on a personal agenda? Do they live in the community or are they an investor? If more Homeowners took the time to become involved in their Association and took a really hard look at the candidates running for office, I believe more times, often than not, better Board Members would be elected and recalls would become far less frequent.
