NO KIDS ALLOWED

I started my career in Real Estate Management in the early eighties in luxury communities that boasted of million dollar fitness centers, business centers and most importantly “NO KIDS ALLOWED”. Weekly resident functions, catering with lots of food and alcohol were a normal part of job descriptions for Community Managers.

Things certainly have changes over the years. In 1988, the Federal Housing Act was revised to include “familiar status” to its protected classes. The impact on the housing industry was immediately fraught with aggressive opposition. It would seem that in this land of freedom, one would be allowed to rent or sell their property in the manner they wish. It would also seem, that people of all ages, would have the right and option to choose to live in a community that caters to a profile of residents who have similar interests and taste. If that means “NO KIDS”, then don’t they have that right? So having communities for 55 and over, isn’t that skirting the fair housing law?. Could it be that the majority of law makers fall into this category and wanted to ensure there was a caveat to the fair housing laws in order to accommodate their potential housing desires?

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for 55 and over communities, but realistically in my twenties and thirties, I was all for No kids and all adult communities as well. . Trying to differentiate between an all adult community in the early eighties and a 55 and over community today is as crazy to me as trying to differentiate HOA’s from COA’s. They really are the same.
