This
week’s blog has been my most difficult topic to address to
date. In the past two years or so, it is the only topic I can
remember that sparked so many discussions between Eric, Jan and
me. Those discussions were on whether or not to write about the
Trayvon Martin /George Zimmerman case and what reaction we would
get from our readers if we did. Ultimately, we decided to move
forward with the topic and each address it in our own manner.
So, although I won't give you my personal opinion on the case
and who I believe to be at fault, I will say the loss of a
vibrant 17-year old boy, is a tragedy, no matter how you look at
it.
A
few years ago, my husband, daughter and I were having lunch at
Chili's. We noted a birthday party at one of the tables. There
were approximately twelve 6-year olds laughing, playing and
enjoying each other's company. Among the races represented at
this table were Black, White, Asian and Indian. All the children
were enjoying the day and oblivious to each other's differences.
My husband and I jokingly said, "Wow looks like the United
Nations" and further commented on how they had NO
conception of racism towards one another. To which my 12 year
old daughter quickly exclaimed "Yeah, until all of the
adults get in their heads!"
How
very true this statement is. If we as adults don't teach our
children that we are ALL equal in Gods eyes, who will?
