WANNABE MR.
PRESIDENT?

We
have written a lot about the board members whose middle names
seem to be either Adolf or Joseph – aka Condo Commandos! They
can surely do a lot of damage to the community – financially
and emotionally.
And
then there are the other types of board members – the folks
who like to be called President since they assume it lifts their
social standing. These folks are considered the DO-NOTHING BOARD
MEMBERS since they fail to take any action or make any decision
– good or bad!
Believe
me – they can as well do a hell of a lot of damage. Inactivity
can be as damaging as being overeager. Communities run by
Do-Nothing board members will quickly face serious problems,
starting with selective enforcement to serious construction
damages caused by delay of repairs.
Let’s
face it, no matter what board members do, there will always be a
few community members who will complain or publicly utter their
displeasure about action or non-action of board members. It’s
just human nature – you can’t please everybody.
These
are as well the kinds of board members who allow the service
providers to run the show. They let the manager take charge of
decisions – and money. But in the end, when the whole house of
cards collapses, the same manager will not take any
responsibility for his/her actions – and will blame the board
using the Nuremberg defense: “I acted on orders of the
board!”
Do
you know how many associations had to pay fines for violations
of FS 718, caused by the action of CAMs who in the end blamed
the board of directors for their wrong-doing?
Let’s
be honest. It’s
not an easy task to serve on the board of directors of a
community association. These volunteers hold the financial
welfare of their neighbors in their hands. Their decisions can
cause chaos for the whole community.
In
other words – little Adolf with a private agenda and a
Do-Nothing board member who runs for office to be called Mr.
President are equally dangerous for the welfare of the
community!
Do your homework before the next election – and beware of the
candidates who start their campaign speech with: “If elected, I
will…!"
