PENNY WISE…

An association needs to be treated like any other business. Sitting
on the board of such a corporation is no different than sitting on
the board of a publicly-traded company. Your role is to lead the
corporation responsibly and inorder to do that you must lean on a
group of professionals to help guide you to your destination.
Without this kind of mindset, you will have a higher probability of
finding yourself making costly mistakes, creating unneeded stress,
and wasting your personal time.
Many board members believe this philosophy/approach is too costly
for their association; however, I strongly disagree. Most of the
problem we see in associations aren't massive problems in the grand
scheme of things, most of the times, they are just approached
incorrectly and without the proper guidance. For instance, many
times, the board gets concerned to call the attorney for an opinion
on a subject matter or situation. They believe the cost for it is
not worth the expense, so they formulate their own opinion. I've
seen first hand how the opposite is true. When boards take this
approach, they are short-sighted. By contacting the attorney for an
opinion, you get information that is based on their direct
knowledge, years of experience, and prior case law. You rely on them
to help you and your team formulate a better outcome. While at
times, it may not be what you want to hear; however, you have an
opportunity to strategize and discuss different approaches that can
be taken to solve the problem. Further, once the attorney opinion is
formulated, you can save it in your digital files for future
reference.
To be successful in any business, you must have a strong network of
individuals surrounding you and your team. There's a cost to doing
business and its no different in an association. Trust in your
network, and if you don't feel like you can trust them start looking
for organizations you can trust. Don't fall into the trap of being
penny wise and pound foolish.
