APPLAUDING THE UNSUNG HEROES: CONDO BOARD MEMBERS
UNDER PRESSURE

In recent months, the media has amplified the
voices of condominium owners frustrated by rising fees, often
painting board members as the villains in this narrative. However,
this portrayal is unfair and overlooks the reality that these board
members are simply adhering to laws designed to protect the
communities they serve. What's often forgotten is that board members
are owners too, and they bear the same financial burdens as everyone
else. Instead of vilifying them, we should applaud their efforts to
do what's right, even when it's unpopular.
Managing a condominium is a delicate balancing
act. Board members are tasked with ensuring their communities are
financially stable and safe while complying with the state's legal
requirements. This is not an easy job, especially when it involves
making tough decisions that directly impact their neighbors and, in
many cases, their own wallets. Yet, these individuals step up and
take on the responsibility, knowing that their choices will
safeguard the future of their communities.
Unfortunately, the current media narrative often
sensationalizes the situation, focusing on the negative aspects of
fee increases without considering the broader context. This has led
to undue pressure on board members already navigating complex
financial and regulatory landscapes. These increases are not
arbitrary; they are necessary to ensure that our buildings remain
safe and well-maintained for years to come.
Tough decisions may be difficult initially, but
their long-term benefits are undeniable. Board members are facing a
barrage of criticism for simply following the law. Still, their
commitment to doing what's right will ensure our communities'
safety, stability, and future prosperity. Our legislators must stand
firm and resist the pressure from media outlets and associations
that failed to take the necessary steps early on.
Unfortunately, some of our legislators are now
considering caving to this pressure, which would be a regrettable
move—especially given that they initially passed these laws in a
unanimous vote. Backtracking on this legislation would undermine the
safety standards we need and send the wrong message about the value
of life and safety. Sometimes, we must stand behind our decisions,
even if it means losing votes because nothing is more valuable than
protecting the lives of our residents.
Let's shift the narrative from criticism to
appreciation. The real story isn't about fee increases—it's about
the dedication and integrity of those willing to make the hard calls
for the greater good. Our board members are not villains; they are
our neighbors, friends, and fellow residents who deserve recognition
for their efforts. Their work today ensures our communities remain
safe, sustainable, and thriving for years.
